Hellenistic time-lords (chronocrators)
Before transits are ever weighed, the Greek tradition asks which planet and which sign hold jurisdiction over the current chapter of life.
Why time-lords come before transits
In modern astrology, every transit to a natal planet is treated as equally loud throughout life. In the Hellenistic tradition, a natal planet is mostly dormant until a time-lord (chronokrator) system hands it the reins of a multi-year chapter, a year, or a month. Only when a planet is activated as a time-lord — or receives the hand-off as sub-lord — do its natal promise and its live transits step onto the stage.
The major time-lord systems compared
| System | Primary source | Starting point | Scale of periods | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zodiacal releasing | Vettius Valens (Anthology IV) | Lot of Spirit, Lot of Fortune or Eros | Chapters of 8–30 years (L1), months/years (L2), weeks (L3), days/hours (L4) | Career arcs, major life peaks, turning points and loosings of the bond |
| Annual profections | Valens, Paulus, Hephaistio, Ptolemy | Ascendant (plus Sun, Moon, Fortune) | Exactly 1 sign per birthday year (1 month per sign for monthly) | The lord of the year, the activated house topic and which transits matter |
| Decennials (dekatêrois) | Vettius Valens, Firmicus Maternus | Sect light (or Ascendant / Moon) | 129 months (10 years 9 months) per general, divided among all 7 planets | Planetary chapters showing how two planets combine across a decade |
| Primary directions (circumambulation) | Dorotheus, Ptolemy, Valens | Ascendant, Midheaven, Sun, Moon, Fortune | Roughly 1 equatorial degree per year through the bounds and rays | When the Ascendant crosses into a new bound lord's territory or meets a planet's ray |
| Solar revolutions | Valens, Abu Ma'shar | Exact return of the Sun to its natal degree | 1 year (birthday to birthday) | Reading the annual sky overlaid on the natal chart beside the profected lord |
| Ages of life & Firdaria | Ptolemy (Tetrabiblos IV.10); Persian tradition | Moon→Saturn (Ages); Sun by day / Moon by night (Firdaria) | Multi-year planetary eras across the lifespan | Broad developmental stages and planetary chapters by sect |
Decennials and circumambulation in detail
In decennials, the seven planets take turns as general time-lord in their zodiacal order in the birth chart, starting from the sect light (or the first planet following the Ascendant). Every general rules for 129 months (ten years and nine months), and within that span each of the seven planets takes a sub-period proportional to its minor planetary years (Sun 19 months, Moon 25, Saturn 30, Jupiter 12, Mars 15, Venus 8, Mercury 20 — totaling 129 months).
In circumambulation (primary directions through the bounds), the rising degree is carried downward by the diurnal rotation of the sphere after birth, stepping through the Egyptian bounds of the rising sign and the signs following it. The bound lord of the directed Ascendant serves as the distributor of the years, while aspect rays cast into those degrees mark specific events.
How Occult Astrology shows it
The Time-lords section computes annual, monthly and daily profections, zodiacal releasing down to Level 4, Valens's decennials, primary directions through the bounds, solar revolutions, Ptolemy's ages of life, climacteric years and Firdaria — all synchronized to the date you are viewing.

Questions
- What is a time-lord (chronocrator) in Hellenistic astrology?
- A planet or zodiac sign assigned rulership over a specific chapter of a person's life by a timing technique such as annual profections, zodiacal releasing, decennials or primary directions.
- How do decennials work in Vettius Valens?
- Each of the seven planets rules a major chapter of 129 months (10 years and 9 months) in the order the planets stand in the birth chart from the sect light. Within each 129-month chapter, the seven planets divide the time into sub-periods according to their planetary numbers (Moon 25 months, Saturn 30, Mercury 20, Sun 19, Mars 15, Jupiter 12, Venus 8).
- What is circumambulation through the bounds?
- Directing the Ascendant (or Lot of Fortune) forward through the degrees of the zodiac by primary motion — roughly one degree of right ascension per year — and handing rulership of each period to the lord of the Egyptian bound the directed point is passing through.
- Which time-lord system should I read first?
- Start with annual profections to find the profected sign and lord of the current year, then read zodiacal releasing from the Lot of Spirit and Lot of Fortune to see the larger multi-year chapter the year sits inside.
Occult Astrology reads a birth chart the way the Greek-language astrologers of antiquity did. Cast a chart and compare it with a Vedic and a modern reading of the same sky.
